DEVELOPER COMMENTARY
When I started working on this game, I didn't really have any plans for it at all, I just wanted to do a custom battle system in 2k3 with the maniacs patch (to see if I could do it, since I never made anything like that before), the ideas for the story only started coming halfway through making that battle system.
Originally, the story was supposed to take place across 5 work shift days. You'd wake up as Place every morning, talk to your wife, explore the town for a bit, talk to your coworkers in the barracks then go to work. Everyday you would have a different coworker in the shift with you, each with their different strengths and weaknesses in battle. On the last day, the demon lord would appear to bring chaos to the world and you and all the coworkers until that point would have to fight against him together.
I ended up scraping all of this because, for one, I didn't really have that much time on my hand after I finished the battle system. For second, I straight up just didn't feel like doing all that, especially not adding support for more than two characters in the battle system. So the story ended up being what it is right now, two guys bantering at work and fighting monsters on a single day's shift. And, of course, since it doesn't make any sense for some generic gate guards to defeat the demon lord, I added the hero to come and save everyone.
I only had ideas for 3 coworkers for my original idea: Drake, some random mage girl and Cristina. Only two of these made it in the final version. Originally, on the 4th day of the original version, Place was supposed to get home early and discover his wife cheating on him with another woman (leading to him being confused as to whether he should be very angry or very turned on by the situation) but when I decided to make it a one-day story instead, I gave Drake this sub-plot instead.
Some of the dialogue and jokes are a bit awkward in retrospective, but I still think they are fine enough.
Finally, I want to mention Drake. When I wrote him, what I was thinking was "I want to write a cool guy that I'd like to go drink with." I really like Drake, I wish he was my friend in real life -_-.
